Concept explainers
Define the term
To describe:
The term 'metabolism'.
Introduction:
The metabolism can be defined as the set of chemical reactions taking place in the body of an organism. All the chemical reactions such as digestion, conversion of food energy to cellular energy, elimination of the nitrogenous wastes, etc are described as metabolic processes.
Explanation of Solution
The metabolism comprised of all type of reactions taking place in the body of the organism. These reactions are important for the survival and well-being of the organism. A set of chemical reactions involving definite chemicals are termed as metabolic pathways, such as respiration, ketogenesis, gluconeogenesis, etc.
The metabolic reactions can be categorized into two types: anabolic and catabolic. The anabolic reactions are those reactions, which involves the synthesis of larger molecules from the smaller ones. For instance, synthesis of proteins from amino acids, synthesis of glycogen from glucose, etc. The catabolic reactions are those reactions, which involves breaking down of the large particles in smaller ones. For instance, the breaking down of proteins in amino acids, glucose to pyruvate, etc.
The metabolic reactions can be defined as all the chemical reactions taking place in the body of an organism.
