Chapter 4, Problem 13Q

Explanation of Solution

Three approaches of detecting errors, working and the probability of detecting errors and their benefits or limitations:

  • Parity check:
    • Working:
      • Assume the two devices are communicating using even parity.
      • While transmitting data, if the number of set bits is odd, then it sets the parity bit to 1and if the number of set bits is even, then it sets the parity bit to 0.
      • Parity can able to detect a single error but it cannot define which bit was in error.
    • Probability:
      • Parity check detects 50 percent of errors.
    • Limitation:
      • Many networks are not using parity because of its minimum error detection rate.
  • Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC):
    • Working:
      • A message in CRC is defined as one long binary number which is divided by a predetermined number and the remainder is used as the CRC code.
      • The predetermined number is selected so that the remainder will be either 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits.
      • The receiver device divides the message by the same predetermined number which produces a remainder...
