It acts as the major component of hemoglobin (red blood cells) that carries oxygen and transports it throughout the body. Iron should be obtained from the diet, so called as essential nutrients. A daily dietary intake of 18 mg of iron is recommended. Iron deficiency in the body causes anemic condition.
