Chapter 39, Problem 2CT
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The reason due to which it is disadvantageous for a male chimpanzee to kill the infant of a female with whom he had sex.

Introduction:

Male dominance plays a big role in chimp society. Female chimpanzees lead most of the life in solitary and are harassed by the much larger males sometimes. In the chimpanzee, sex is strictly about reproduction, and reproductive tactics can lead to infanticide. The killing of an offspring by an unrelated or sometimes related male is infanticide. Infanticidal individuals reduce potential competitors to their offspring and make the female chimpanzee available to have sex.

Summary Introduction

To determine:

The way by which the increased sexual activity of bonobo female reduces male infanticide.

Introduction:

Bonobos are in a very close genetic relationship with the chimpanzee. The bonobos are easygoing, sexually equal, and eager for recreational sex. Bonobo society is known for strong bonds between females and almost constant sexual activity amongst all member of a group.
