Summary Introduction
To name: The different types of the bone cells.
Concept introduction: The musculoskeletal system of the body is composed of two types of systems that are skeleton (bones and joint) and soft tissues (skeletal muscles, ligaments and tendons). Bones are the protective support for the tissues and organs of the body. It is the essential source of minerals in the body.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
Bone cells enable the growth of the bone, repair itself, and able to change the shape of the bone. It also continuously synthesizes the new bone tissue in the body and reabsorbs the old bone tissues. Bone has three types of cells. They are as follows:
- 1. Osteoblasts
- 2. Osteoclasts
- 3. Osteocytes
Name of the bones | Functions |
Osteoblasts | Proteoglycans and collagen synthesis, mineralization of osteoid matrix, production of osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) |
Osteoclasts | Bone resorption and bone homeostasis |
Osteocytes | It transforms osteoblasts that are trapped in osteoid, maintenance of bone matrix, production of sclerostin that inhibits bone growth. |
