Chapter 37, Problem 1FIB
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The hormones are the signaling molecules which are produced by cells present in the glands. The hormones are transported to distant targets organs by the circulatory system. The synthesis of hormones is a characteristic feature of multicellular organisms.

Answer to Problem 1FIB

Correct answer:

Endocrine hormones are molecules released by cells that are parts of the endocrine system. These cells are embedded in capillary beds, so the hormones enter the bloodstream and move throughout the body. Only specific cells of the body called target cells can respond to any given hormone because only these cells bear proteins, called receptors that can bind the hormone.

Explanation of Solution

The endocrine hormones are the chemical messengers which are synthesized and stored in the cells which are part of the endocrine system. The secretory cells or the cells which synthesize hormones remain embedded within the capillary network. The hormones from there enter the bloodstream.

There are only specific cells which have the receptors to which the hormones are able to bind. All the cells do not have all kinds of receptors. These specific types of cells are known as target cells.

Conclusion

The endocrine hormones are produced by the cells of the endocrine system which are embedded in the capillary network which allows the transportation of hormones to distant organs. The hormones bind to receptors which are present on specific cells known as target cells.

A farmer has noticed that his soybean plants produce more beans in some years than others. He claims to always apply the same amount of fertilizer to the plants, but he suspects the difference in crop yield may have something to do with the amount of water the crops receive. The farmer has observed that the soybeans on his farm usually receive between 0 to 0.5 inches of water per day, but he is unsure of the optimal average daily amount of water with which to irrigate. 1. State a question that addresses the farmer’s problem 2. Conduct online research on “soybean crop irrigation" and record a brief summary of the findings  3.
