Summary Introduction

To discuss:

The adaptation of the leaves for photosynthesis according to the climate.

Introduction:

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert nutrients into food, in the presence of sunlight and water. The leaves are the site of photosynthesis. In order to adapt to the climate, the leaves undergo modification and regulation.

Explanation of Solution

The adaptation of leaves are as follows:

In xerophytic habitats, the leaves are fleshy and thick with water storage tissues. It allows the plant to conserve limited supply of water and not dry up.

In desert areas, the leaves are spine or needle-like to avoid excess water loss.

The size of the stomata is regulated, based on the climate conditions. When the weather is dry, the stomata reduce in size, to prevent excess loss of water. Under humid conditions, the stomata open wider to allow more water absorption.

In areas where there is a struggle for resources like sunlight, the trees produce a lot of leaves to ensure sufficient production of food.

For plants that need to breathe in water, the leaves sprout adventitious roots to allow them to float on water.

Conclusion

According to the availability of the sunlight and water, cvarious plants have adaptation to survive in that particular environment.

Imagine you are a botanist.  Below are characteristics of a never-before described plant species recently identified as part of the ‘All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory’ (ATBI).   Field Notes:  Specimen collected from shaded area along stream in South Cumberland State Park                 (Grundy County, TN). Laboratory Analysis:  Body:  Large leaves emerging from underground rhizome. Size: 63 cm  Chromosomal Analysis: Plant body is diploid—chromosome number of 44. Lignin test: Positive Cuticle: Present Leaves:  Present—large with branched veins. Underside has sori (containing haploid spores). Roots: Present—branch from the inside. Stem: Present—vascular tissue (xylem & phloem) present. Life History:  Diploid sporophyte dominant generation.  Haploid spores germinate into heart-shaped, haploid, gametophyte.  Water required for fertilization; no seed is produced.  Diploid zygote develops into sporophyte.
