Answer to Problem 44PQ

The dispersion of the first order is 15.4×104rad/m, second order is 31×104rad/m and the third order is 46.7×104rad/m.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for mth maxima of diffraction grating.

    dsinθ=mλsinθ=mλdθ=sin1(mλd)                                                                                                         (I)

Here, d is the spacing grating, λ is the wavelength and m is the order.

Write the expression for diffraction grating in the first order.

    D=mdcosθ                                                                                                            (II)

Here, D is the diffraction grating.

Conclusion:

Calculate grating spacing as follows.

    d=11.54×103rulings=6.49×104cm×1m100cm=6.49×106m

Substitute 1 for m, 310nm for λ and 6.49×106m for d in equation (I) to calculate θ1.

    θ1=sin1(1×(310nm×1m109nm)6.49×106m)=sin1(0.0477)=2.74°

Substitute 1 for m, 6.49×106m for d and 2.74° for θ1 in equation (II) to calculate D1.

    D1=16.49×106m×cos(2.74°)=15.4×104rad/m

Substitute 2 for m, 310nm for λ and 6.49×106m for d in equation (I) to calculate θ2.

    θ2=sin1(2×(310nm×1m109nm)6.49×106m)=sin1(0.0954)=5.47°

Substitute 2 for m, 6.49×106m for d and 5.47° for θ2 in equation (II) to calculate D2.

    D2=26.49×106m×cos(5.47°)=31×104rad/m

Substitute 3 for m, 310nm for λ and 6.49×106m for d in equation (I) to calculate θ3.

    θ3=sin1(3×(310nm×1m109nm)6.49×106m)=sin1(0.1431)=8.23°

Substitute 3 for m, 6.49×106m for d and 8.23° for θ3 in equation (II) to calculate D3.

    D3=36.49×106m×cos(8.23°)=46.7×104rad/m

Therefore, the dispersion of the first order is 15.4×104rad/m, second order is 31×104rad/m and the third order is 46.7×104rad/m.
