Case summary:
Mr. C is a 65-year-old African-American patient who is married and lives with his wife. Recently Mr. C is diagnosed with MI (myocardial infarction) and currently on telemetry nursing unit. Mr. C medical record states that he had and hypertension and he had been prescribed with propranolol (Inderal). His blood pressure reveals 122/82 mm Hg and he is taking his medicines regularly. The patient who takes antihypertensive drugs will cause sexual dysfunction. On speaking with Mr. C, the nurse finds out that Mr. C wanted to have a sexual relationship with his spouse.

Explanation of Solution
The assessment activities of the nurse to determine the sexual function of Mr. C is by asking nonjudgmental questions like:
- How is your sexual interest after taking of antihypertensive drugs like propranolol?
- How do you compare your sexual activity before and after taking of the propranolol drug?
- Do you any feeling of fear of having a sexual relationship after the diagnosis of MI?
- Do you have any erectile dysfunction?
While asking the nonjudgmental question, the nurse can assess the sexual function and his interest in the sexual relationship. According to the assessment made, the nurse can counsel the patient direct him for further consultation with the physician.
