To distinguish: Between apical meristems and lateral meristems.
Concept introduction: In plants, the growth is throughout their whole life. This is due to the presence of meristems. These meristematic cells divide continuously and lead to the formation of new cells, which are further, elongated and differentiated. The two mechanisms by which woody plants increase its size are primary growth and secondary growth. The two types of meristematic tissue that is responsible for the plant growth are apical meristem and lateral meristem.
