Chapter 33, Problem 74EAP

FIGURE CP33.74 shows light of wavelength ? incident at angle on ϕ a reflection grating of spacing d. We want to find the angles θ m at which constructive interference occurs.

a. The figure shows paths 1 and 2 along which two waves travel and interfere. Find an expression for the path-length difference Δ r = r 2 r 1 .

b. Using your result from part a, find an equation (analogous to Equation 33.15) for the angles θ m at which diffraction occurs when the light is incident at angle ϕ . Notice that m can be a negative integer in your expression, indicating that path 2 is shorter than path 1.

c. Show that the zeroth-order diffraction is simply a “reflection.” That is, θ m = ϕ .

d. Light of wavelength 500 nm is incident at ϕ = 40 ° on a reflection grating having 700 reflection lines/mm. Find all angles θ m at which light is diffracted. Negative values of θ m are interpreted as an angle left of the vertical.

e. Draw a picture showing a single 500 nm light ray incident at ϕ = 40 ° and showing all the diffracted waves at the correct angles.

The figure shows light of wavelength λ incident at angle φ on a reflection grating of spacing d. We want to find the angles θm at which constructive interference occurs. a. The figure shows paths 1 and 2 along which two waves travel and interfere. Find an expression for the path-length difference ∆r = r2 − r1. b. Show that the zeroth-order diffraction is simply a “reflection.” That is θo = φ. c. Light of wavelength 500 nm is incident at φ = 40o on a reflection grating having 700 reflection lines/mm. Find all angles θm at which light is diffracted. Negative values of θm are interpreted as an angle left of the vertical. d. Draw a picture showing a single 500 nm light ray incident at θm = 40o and showing all the diffracted waves at the correct angles.
You investigated a new material and subjected it to the following optical experiments. During a transmission experiment, you observed that, at a thickness of 30 mm, the material transmits only 50% of the intensity. a. What thickness is required to transmit 25% of the incident intensity? b. What fraction of the incident intensity is absorbed by the material for the thickness solved in a?
A laser beam with wavelength λ = 675 nm hits a grating with n = 4750 grooves per centimeter. A. Calculate the grating spacing, d, in centimeters.  B. Find the sin of the angle, θ2, at which the 2nd order maximum will be observed, in terms of d and λ.  C. Calculate the numerical value of θ2 in degrees.
