Scientists use laser range-finding to measure the distance to the moon with great accuracy. A brief laser pulse is fired at the moon, then the time interval is measured until the “echo” is seen by a telescope. A laser beam spreads out as it travels because it diffracts through a circular exit as il leaves the laser. In order for
the reflected light to be bright enough to detect, the laser spot on the moon must be no more than 1.0 km in diameter. Staying within this diameter is accomplished by using a special large-diameter laser. If

- answer is D, explain how?arrow_forwardHandwrittenarrow_forwardX-rays have a wavelength small enough to image individual atoms, but are challenging to detect because of their typical frequency. Suppose an X-ray camera uses X-rays with a wavelength of 3.10 nm. Calculate the frequency of the X-rays. Be sure your answer has the correct number of significant digits.arrow_forward
- A marine radar operating at a frequency of 9400 MHz emits groups of radio waves 0.0800 us in duration. Radio waves, like light waves, are electromagnetic in nature and travel at 3.00x10° m/s. Find (a) the wavelength of these waves; and (b) the length of each wave group, which is indicative of the precision with which the radar can measure distance.arrow_forwardAn anstonomer on a planet orbiting the star Deneb wants to differentiate the reflected light by Earth from the light of the Sun. First, consider the area of Earths disk which reflects the Sun's intercepted light. Second, consider the surface area of a sphere with the same radius as Earths orbit around the Sun. Take the ratio of these two areas. Assume the Earths radius is 6400.0 km and is 1.3 x108 km from the Sun.arrow_forwardA light ray is incident from air into glass (ng = 1.52) then onto water (ny = 1.33). The wavelength of light in air (na = 1) is hair = 500 nm and it travels at a speed c = 3 x 10% m/s. The wavelength of light, 2, and its frequency, f, in water, are, respectively: 376 nm,8x10*11 Hz 500 nm,6x10*14 Hz 376 nm,6x10*14 Hz 500 nm,8x10*11 Hzarrow_forward
- Light with a wavelength of 571 nm is in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. What is the numerical value of the exponent p if 571 nm = 571 x 10² cm? p= Report your numerical answer below, assuming three significant figures.arrow_forwardThe dispersion curve of glass is the curve that describes how the index of refraction of glass changes as a function of the wavelength. This curve can be represented approximately by Cauchy's empirical equation, n = A + B/2² where for a specific glass in question A = 1.40 and B = 2.5 × 10 nm² (yes, those units are nanometer squared). Find the phase and group velocities for light of 500nm wavelength in that glass.arrow_forwardA laser beam at a wavelength of 1.11 μm is coupled into an optic fiber, resulting in 138.2 mW of light inside the fiber initially. The fiber is 4.75 km long and has an absorption coefficienct of 1.562 dB/km. What light power, in mW, is at the end of the fiber?arrow_forward
- Zara and Chloe want to build a chamber that is of the following dimensions: 20cm(length) x 10cm(width) x 5cm(height). They are looking to buy a UV-C lamp capable of disinfecting their medical instruments, the bulb needs to be able to produce around the wavelengths of 254 nm. Considering the area within the box what wattage does the bulb need to be to effectively disinfect and sterilize their instruments.arrow_forwardChapter 33, Problem 003 Z Your answer is partially correct.
