Chapter 3.3, Problem 3.9P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The formula of the ionic compound zinc oxide has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Ionic compounds:  Ionic compounds consist of cations and anions.  The sum of the charges in an ionic compound is always zero (overall).  Ionic bonds held the ions together to form ionic compounds.

Rules for determining the formula of an ionic compound:

  1. 1. The cation and anion is determined, and the periodic table is used to determine the charges.
  2. 2. One of each ion is required, when ions of equal charge combine.  The ionic charges are used to determine relative number of each ion, when ions of unequal charges are combined.
  3. 3. The formula of the cation is written first, followed by the anion.  The charges are omitted and the number of each ion is indicated using subscripts.
