Concept explainers
The correct option for the statement “Each second, the burning Sun’s mass”.
Answer to Problem 5RAT
The correct option for the statement “Each second, the burning Sun’s mass” is option (c).
Explanation of Solution
The Sun is energy source and generates energy by burning hydrogen atom and later converts into a Helium atom. Due to this process, the core of the Sun gets saturated. The nuclear fusion reaction in the Sun liberates energy that is huge in amount.
Sun loses its mass in the order of nine kilograms of energy, every second and in a year, this mass goes to seventeen. Every second, the Sun fusion processes are converting about 700 million tons of hydrogen into helium.
During the fusion process, 0.034% of the Sun’s current mass converted in each year, so the Sun loses its mass and many scientists considered it as threatened to live. But on later study and estimation, it was proved wrong.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the correct option for the statement “Each second, the burning Sun’s mass” is option (c).
