Mycoses term is used for denoting fungal infection in case of animal and humans. Various physiological and environmental factors control occurrence of the fungal disease. The mycoses infections are classified on the bases of site, route of infection, and also on the virulence effect of the mycoses.

Based on the site of infection mycoses infection are of three types: cutaneous, subcutaneous, and deep. Cutaneous mycoses are limited to the stratum corneum and deeper layers of the epidermis and do not show any sign of inflammation. Common cutaneous mycoses includes: white piedra (Trichosporon beigelii), black piedra (Piedraia hortae), tinea nigra (Phaeoannellomyces werneckii), and pityriasis versicolor (Malassezia furfur).

Subcutaneous mycoses infection involves upper and inner epidermis and subcutaneous tissues. This infection even leads to inflammation of the tissues. Some of the common genera of species causing subcutaneous infection are: Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton.

The most common mycoses cases observed in the population are: Athlete's foot caused by Tinea pedis and this is a type of cutaneous infection most commonly seen in athletes and sports person. Vaginal yeast infection is a common form of Candida overgrowth and is an example of subcutaneous infection.
