Chapter 32, Problem 10TYU
Summary Introduction

To describe:

A hypothesis concerning the relative rates of evaporative water loss by populations of Merriam’s kangaroo rats (Dipodomys merriami) that live in moist versus dry environments and the testing of the hypothesis using a humidity sensor to detect evaporative water loss by the kangaroo rats.

Concept introduction:

The variation in nephron structure occurs from species to species as the habitat changes. The kangaroo rats and other desert animal’s release hyperosmotic urine as their loop of Henle extend deep into the medulla. This long loop produces the concentrated urine so minimizes the water loss. Humidity sensor can used to test the evaporation loss by them.

HOTSPOT ANSWER Question 18 After pulling in their fishing nets, Juniper discovered a species of fish they hadn't seen before. The fish has large gills, a swim bladder, a streamlined body, and well-developed muscles that can withstand changes in pressure. Press the hotspot that indicates the water layer where this fish most likely lives. Hint: If it can withstand changes in pressure, it's probably swimming be- tween zones. Being as specific as possible, discuss how global warming can beexpected to alter the water physiology of animals and what theecological consequences might be. Figure 28.25 might provide auseful starting point, but do not limit yourself to it. Parks set asideto protect animals have defined geographical boundaries. Howmight the relation between global warming and water physiologyaffect the effectiveness of the park program?
