Question
Chapter 31.4, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction
To propose:
A hypothesis explaining why a population of plants growing in a breezy location is more prone to herbivory by insects than the population of same species of plants growing in shelter.
Concept introduction:
Over the course of evolution, plants have developed elaborate mechanisms to protect themselves from herbivory. This includes chemical defense (release of toxiccompounds like lignins, cannabinoids and more), mechanical defense (thorns, resins and so on), indirect defense (attracting the enemies of the herbivores), camouflaging, mimicry and leaf shedding and colour.

Scenario 4: On your frequent trips to Costa Rica you have seen that there are certain trees that have
ants that live on them and the same species of trees without ants. Trees that have ants living on them
show little sign of being eaten by herbivores (deer, cows, etc.), but trees without ants are severely injured
by herbivores. You think that ants may protect these trees somehow from herbivores.

a When planted alongside garlic buds, strawberry plants are bug-free
If garlic buds deter bugs that attack strawberry plants, then strawberry plants that are planted alongside garlic buds will
host fewer bugs than those strawberry plants that are planted on their own

It is a major problem in Victoria’s Strzelecki, Otway and Dandenong ranges. More than 1000 dairy farms are affected by the weed. Biological control involves introducing a living predator (plant or animal) to control the species rather than using a chemical pesticide. Researchers are examining the use of beetles and moths as a biological control for ragwort. The beetles and moths will feed on the weed. This is an alternative to using chemical pesticides to kill the ragwort. For biological control to contribute to ecologically sustainable development, it is essential that. pesticide companies maintain profits. food production is high in all regions. there is community support for biological control. biological control does not degrade the environment for future generations.arrow_forward

What effect would you expect growing the population at a higher temperature (but not so hot as to be damaging) to have on the pattern of population growth? The population would reach carrying capacity more slowly (lower r). Carrying capacity would be increased. The population would become a source rather than sink The population would reach carrying capacity faster (higher r). The population would transition from logistic to exponential growth.arrow_forward

What is a cost to the plant that does not provide food? A cost is that the plants not providing food would need to grow taller to reduce herbivory. The cost to the plant that does not make food for the ants is the energy saved by not having to make food. The plant may also gain resources as a carbon sources will be brought to it by the ants which would be a cost to the plant. If food is not provided to the ants they will need to go off of the plant to forage for food reducing the plants defenses. The ants will starve and not be able to defend the plant. If the palm populations can be harvested in a sustainable manner at the same rate at which they can potentially grow, then what was the estimated maximum sustainable annual harvest rate for the palms? What was it for the parrots? Based on data originally given in the scenario, recall that the area is 10,000 km2, that 10 km2 hosts 1 parrot (of any age) and 1,000 palms, that felling every thousandth palm kills a nesting pair of parrots, and that carrying capacities for each species are twice their current densities.
