A filter-like mechanism in the human respiratory system prevents harmful particles from getting into the lungs. As a result of the extensive branching that leads to the lungs, oxygen may enter and remove carbon dioxide from the body. The upper respiratory system is made up of the nasal cavity and throat, while the lower respiratory tract is made up of the lungs, which also include the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and alveoli.
