To describe: The way in which the lifestyle of a gastropod differs from that of a cephalopod.
Introduction: The Lophotrochozoa is one of the two major classes of protozoans that include the bilateral animals. They are triploblastic animals and most of them have a true coelom and a tube-within-a-tube body plan. The Lophotrochozoa include the platyhelminthes (
To identify: Adaptations that have evolved in gastropods and cephalopods for its particular lifestyle.
Introduction: The Lophotrochozoa is one of the two major classes of protozoans that include the bilateral animals. They are triploblastic animals and most of them have a true coelom and a tube-within-a-tube body plan. The Lophotrochozoa include the platyhelminthes (flatworms), rotifers, nemerteans, mollusks, annelids, and lophophorate phyla. Mollusks are divided into four clades, namely chitons, gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods.

- Mollusca (clams, abalone, nudibranchs, snails, squid, octopi, etc). Unifying features include shell, mantle, radula, foot, visceral mass Which classes show a loss of the shell. How does the shell benefit an organism, how does the loss of the shell benefit other members of this phylum? Distinguish between polyplacophora, bivalva, gastropoda, and chephalopoda We see the first evolution of a true eye here. Who has it? What are chromatophores? How doe members of this group use them? What other unique defense addaptaions do we see in this group? (warning colors, 2 shells, ink)arrow_forwardCompare and contrast anatomy and ecological role of a Bivalve and a Cephalopod. Based on their anatomy how are they suited to their particular lifestylearrow_forwardA fishing net brings up a soft bodied animal with a coiled external shell. How can you determine whether the animal is a gastropod or a cephalopod? A) give one unique trait that would allow you to identify the organism as a member of class gastropoda. B) give one unique trait that would allow you to identify the organism as a cephalopodarrow_forward

What are the striking characteristics of this phylum which help you identify mollusks easily? What are the importance of mollusks? Differentiate univalves from bivalves. How do mollusks breathe?arrow_forwardcompare cnidarians to sponges and to the clade containing flatworms, mollusks, and annelids. What features are similar among these groups? What features are different?arrow_forward
