Chapter 31, Problem 1AQ

Describe the sequence of steps you would take if your child received a bite (provoked or unprovoked) from a stray dog with no collar and record of rabies immunization. Present one scenario in which you were able to capture and detain the dog and another for a dog that escaped. How would these procedures differ from a situation in which the child was bitten by a dog that had a collar and rabies tag with documented, up-to-date rabies immunizations?

Summary Introduction

To explain:

The different steps to be taken in case of a dog bite that may or may not result in rabies.

Concept introduction:

Rabies caused by “rhabdovirus” is an animal transmitted viral disease affecting different kinds of individuals majorly “warm-blooded animals”. The disease mainly affects the nervous system of an individual and may lead to death in case symptoms are not treated during a span of time. The symptoms observed in an individual are dependent on the inoculation site, location, and transmission of the virus through the bite. The virus mainly affects different parts of the brain which includes “thalamus and hypothalamus”. The guidelines for the treatment of humans that are exposed to rabies are outlined by WHO (World Health Organization).

Explanation of Solution

The steps to be taken in case the child received a bite from the stray dog with no collar are summarized below:

(1) The wound should be cleaned immediately to stop the spread of infection. The wound can be also run under hot water for the process of thorough cleaning.

(2) The wound should be left open to bleed for some time and may be squeezed to prevent the entry of the virus in an individual.

(3) Ethanol can be applied in combination with proper antiseptics to prevent the infection process.

(4) A physician should be consulted in any case of emergency.

In the case where the dog can be detained and captured would provide an insight into the development of rabies in the dog. In case the child was bitten by the dog that was associated with the rabies tag with updated rabies immunization, the child may develop the symptoms for rabies disease. In case potential symptoms are observed in the child, the child should be immunized by the process of vaccination.

Appropriate preventive measures should be taken in case of rabies symptoms observed in humans because this may have a negative impact on the neurological conditions (affecting different parts of the brain) of an individual.
