To define:
Administration of octreotide (Sandostatin) 50 mcg subcut twice a day. The drug is available in 0.05 mg/mL of injectable form. How many milliliters of the drug will be taken by the nurse?
Concept introduction:
Octreotide (Sandostatin) is an inhibitor of the natural growth hormone (GH). It suppresses the release and the effect of GH. It is a synthetic polypeptide that mimics the structural and pharmacological properties of somatostatin (growth hormone inhibitor). Octreotide is used to decrease the plasma concentration of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). VIPoma is a type of tumor secreted by the VIP protein and that leads to profuse watery diarrhea, achlorhydria, and hypokalemia. Also, octreotide is used to treat carcinoid syndrome, acromegaly, and gastrointestinal fistula.
