Summary Introduction

Desmopressin (DDAVP) is a synthetic vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) and it decreases the production of urine. Desmopressin mimics the function of the antidiuretic hormone. Desmopressin is used for the treatment of diabetes insipidus that is associated with dehydration, polydipsia, polyuria, hemophilia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and type I von Willebrand’s disease. Carbamazepine, demeclocycline, lithium and alcohol interact with desmopressin, and disturb the effect of desmopressin. The common side effects of desmopressin are increased blood pressure, low blood sodium, facial flushing, seizures, nausea, diarrhea, uterine cramping, and headache.
