Answer to Problem 1DQ

Electric spark occurs when there is large energy discharge when the steady flow of current is disrupted and the stored magnetic field energy is released.

Explanation of Solution

An electric spark is an abrupt electrical discharge that occurs when there is transformation from conductive to non-conductive states.

In an electric trolley, the electricity needed for transportation is given by the constant current flow from the overhead wire. There is always a constant current in the wire which creates a magnetic field. The current continues its flow through the arm of the trolley. When a junction comes and there is a momentarily discontinuity the current from the wire experiences a transition from the conductive to the non-conductive medium. The magnetic field energy gets released causing the ignition or the spark. Thus the break in the flow of the current causes the spark.

Conclusion:

Therefore, electric spark occurs when there is large energy discharge when the steady flow of current is disrupted and the stored magnetic field energy is released.
