Chapter 3, Problem 3B.2AE

(i)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The entropy of vaporisation of trichloromethane at a given temperature has to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The randomness present in the system is called its entropy.  It is an extensive property.  At equilibrium, the entropy of the system is zero.  It is denoted by S.  The entropy of vaporisation is the increase in entropy when vaporisation of liquid takes place.  It is denoted by ΔSvap.

(ii)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The entropy change of the surroundings has to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The randomness present in the system is called its entropy.  It is an extensive property.  At equilibrium, the entropy of the system is zero.  It is denoted by S.  The total entropy is the summation of the entropy of the system and the surroundings.
