Chapter 3, Problem 3.8P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The type of flow for air in the given steel pipe is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The formula for the Reynold number, NRe is defined as:

  NRe=DV¯ρμ ...... (1)

Here, V¯ is the average liquid velocity, ρ is the density of the fluid, μ is the viscosity of the fluid, and D is the pipe diameter.

The flow is laminar for NRe<2100 and turbulent for NRe>4000 . In between 2100 and 4000, the flow is in transition from laminar to turbulent.

The ideal gas equation is:

  p=ρRTM ...... (2)

Here, ρ is the density of the gas, p is the pressure of the gas, M is the molar mass of the gas, T is the temperature of the gas, and R is the universal gas constant.

An ideal gas is the gas which obeys ideal gas laws which is a simplified equation of states.

A real gas behaves as an ideal gas at higher temperature and lower pressure. At STP, a mole of an ideal gas has a volume of 22.4 L .

Derive an expression for incompressible flow in a horizontal pipe of constant diameter andwithout fittings or valves which shows that the pressure is a linear function of pipe length. Whatother assumptions are required for this result? Is this result valid for non-horizontal pipes? Howwill the presence of fittings, valves and other hardware affect this result?
Ethylene glycol liquid is used as an antifreeze in many applications. If it is stored in a vessel at a pressure of at 150 psig flows through a ¾ inch-diameter hole to atmospheric pressure. Estimate the discharge rate if the ambient pressure is 1 atm. For ethylene glycol at 77°F, the specific gravity is 1.15 and the viscosity is 25 cP. The molecular weight is 62.07.
