Concept explainers
CP A rocket designed to place small payloads into orbit is carried to an altitude of 12.0 km above sea level by a converted airliner. When the airliner is flying in a straight line at a constant speed of 850 km/h, the rocket is dropped. After the drop, the airliner maintains the same altitude and speed and continues to fly in a straight line. The rocket falls for a brief time, after which its rocket motor turns on. Once that motor is on, the combined effects of thrust and gravity give the rocket a constant acceleration of magnitude 3.00g directed at an angle of 30.0° above the horizontal. For safety, the rocket should be at least 1.00 km in front of the airliner when it climbs through the airliner’s altitude. Your job is to determine the minimum time that the rocket must fall before its engine starts. Ignore air resistance. Your answer should include (i) a diagram showing the flight paths of both the rocket and the airliner, labeled at several points with vectors for their velocities and accelerations; (ii) an x-t graph showing the motions of both the rocket and the airliner; and (iii) a y-t graph showing the motions of both the rocket and the airliner. In the diagram and the graphs, indicate when the rocket is dropped, when the rocket motor turns on, and when the rocket climbs through the altitude of the airliner.

- A student at the top of a building of height h throws one ball upward with a speed of vi and then throws a second ball downward with the same initial speed vi. Just before it reaches the ground, is the final speed of the ball thrown upward (a) larger, (b) smaller, or (c) the same in magnitude, compared with the final speed of the ball thrown downward?arrow_forwardWhile standing on the roof of a building, a child tosses a tennis ball with an initial speed of 16 m/s at an angle of 25° below the horizontal. In one event, the sled reaches a top speed of 9.2 m/sm/s before starting down the initial part of the track, which is sloped downward at an angle of 5.0 degrees. What is the sled's speed after it has traveled the first 140 m?arrow_forward
- An airplane releases a ball as it flies parallel to the ground at a height of h = 215 m as shown in the figure. If the ball lands on the ground a horizontal distance equal to the height h from the release point, calculate the speed v of the plane. Neglect any effects due to air resistance, and use g = 9.81 m/s² for the acceleration due to gravity. h U = m/sarrow_forwardIn the winter sport of bobsledding, athletes push their sled along a horizontal ice surface and then hop on the sled as it starts to careen down the steeply sloped track. In one event, the sled reaches a top speed of 9.2 m/s before starting down the initial part of the track, which is sloped downward at an angle of 6.0°. To start her dive, she runs off of the platform with a speed of 1.3 m/s in the horizontal direction. You will be asked to find the diver's speed just before she enters the water. What are the x- and y components of her velocity just before she enters the water? Note: these may require calculations.vfx = 1.3 m/s; vfy = -4.5 m/svfx = 1.3 m/s; vfy = -9.4 m/svfx = 0 m/s; vfy = 0 m/svfx = 4.5 m/s; vfy = -4.5 m/sarrow_forward
- A relief airplane is delivering a food package to a group of people stranded on a very small island. The island is too small for the plane to land on, and the only way to deliver the package is by dropping it. The airplane flies horizontally with constant speed of 352 km/hour at an altitude of 875 m . The positive x and y directions are defined in the figure. For all parts, assume that the "island" refers to the point at a distance D from the point at which the package is released, as shown in the figure. Ignore the height of this point above sea level. Assume that the free-fall acceleration is g = 9.80 m/s2 After a package is dropped from the plane, how long will it take for it to reach sea level from the time it is dropped?
