Answer to Problem 3.1P

The time required to complete the filling and emptying cycle for a refuse collection vehicle is 194.28min .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The two container of 80gallons each has 75% full.

The refuse is picked up twice per week.

The truck has a compaction ratio of 1:2 .

The pickup time is 1.58min per service.

The time spend by truck on disposal is 20min .

The time spend to reach the disposal site is 35min .

Calculation:

Assume the volume of the truck as 20yd3 .

Calculate the volume of refuse produced by each resident in yd3 .

  Vres=2×80gallons×( 0.00495 yd 3 1gallon)×0.75=0.594yd3

Here, the volume of refuses produces by each resident is Vres .

Write the expression to calculate the compacted volume by the truck’s compacting ratio.

  Vcom=12×Vres  ..... (I)

Here, the compacted volume is Vcom and the volume of refuse produced by each resident is Vres .

Substitute 0.594yd3 for Vres in Equation (I).

  Vcom=12×0.594yd3=0.297yd3

Write the expression to calculate the number of loads done by the truck.

  L=VtruckVcom  ..... (II)

Here, the number of loads done by the truck is L , the volume of the truck is Vtruck and the compacted volume is Vcom .

Substitute 20yd3 for Vtruck and 0.297yd3 for Vcom in Equation (II).

  L=20 yd30.297 yd3=67.3468

Write the expression to calculate the total time of cycle.

  TC=2×Td+(Ts×L)+Tdis  ..... (III)

Here, the total time of cycle is TC , the time spend to reach the disposal site is Td , the number of loads done by the truck is L , the service time is Ts and the time spend by truck on disposal is Tdis .

Substitute 35min for Td , 1.58min for Ts , 68 for L and 20min for Tdis in Equation (III).

  TC=2×35min+(1.58min×66)+20min=70min+104.28min+20min=194.28min

Conclusion:

Thus, the time required to complete the filling and emptying cycle for a refuse collection vehicle is 194.28min .
