Interpretation:
The rule that states that any organic compound that contains the oxygen, nitrogen, or a multiple bond will dissolve in concentrated sulfuric acid on the basis of acid–base reactions and intermolecular forces is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
An organic compound that contains an atom with an unpaired electron pair acts as a potential base.
Bases are the species that accept proton.
Acids are the species that donates proton.
When the oxygen and nitrogen containing compounds dissolve in a strong acid, an acid–base reaction takes place.
“Like dissolves like” polar solute dissolve in polar solvent and nonpolar solute dissolve in nonpolar solvent.
