Summary Introduction

The prefix homeo- is a commonly used prefix. A prefix refers to a word element present at the beginning of a word. Substitution of one prefix with another modifies the meaning of the word. For example, in the word homeo/plasia, the prefix homeo- means same; the suffix -plasia means growth. Substituting the prefix homeo- (same) to hyper- (excessive) modifies the meaning of the term. The term hyperplasia denotes an excessive increase in the cells present in an organ or tissue.
