Temperature The table lists the average monthly temperature in Vancouver, Canada. Source: Weather.com.
These average temperature cycle yearly and change only slightly over many years. Because of the repetitive nature of temperatures from year to year, they can be modeled with a sine function. Some graphing calculators have a sine regression feature. If the table is entered into a calculator, the points can be plotted automatically, as shown in the early chapters of this book with other types of functions.
a. Use a graphing calculator to plot the ordered pairs (month, temperature) in the interval
b. Use a graphing calculator with a sine regression feature to find an equation of the sine function that models these data.
c. Graph the equation from part
d. Calculate the period for the function found in part
e.
f.

- Velocity of a Ferris Wheel Use Figure 7 as a model of the Ferris wheel called Colossus that is built in St. Louis in 1986. The diameter of the wheel is 165 feet. A brochure that gives some statistics associated with Colossus indicates that it rotates at 1.5 revolutions per minute and also indicates that a rider on the wheel is traveling at 10 miles per hour. Explain why these two numbers, 1.5 revolutions per minute and 10 miles per hour, cannot both be correct.arrow_forwardDoes Table 2 represent a linear function? - Topic: Circular Functions. Please answer number 1 and 2.arrow_forwardIn whoville, the amount of rainfall varies greatly each week and follows a sinusoidal pattern. The following data is the recorded millimeters (mm) of precipitation across 14 weeks. Determine a sine and a cosine function that approximates the amount of rainfall over time in weeks. Decimals are allowed. Week 1, rainfall(mm) - 1.4 Week 2, rainfall(mm) - 3.1 Week 3, rainfall(mm) - 4.3 Week 4, rainfall(mm) - 2.9 Week 5, rainfall(mm) - 1.2 Week 6, rainfall(mm) - 0.1 Week 7, rainfall(mm) - 1.3 Week 8, rainfall(mm) - 2.7 Week 9, rainfall(mm) - 4.3 Week 10, rainfall(mm) - 3.2 Week 11, rainfall(mm) - 1.1 Week 12, rainfall(mm) - 0.2 Week 13, rainfall(mm) - 1.2 Week 14, rainfall(mm) - 2.8arrow_forwardThe topic is Regressionarrow_forward
