To determine: How genetic variation is affected if fertilized gametes are from one gametophyte.

Concept introduction:

Every gene pool includes various alleles of genes. Genetic variation occurs due to the variation in the DNA sequences in our genome. These mutations can cause a large effect and evolutionary changes that occur due to the gene flow from generation to generation. Genetic variations are advantageous to a population as it enables some individuals to adapt to the environment and help them to maintain their survival. Genetic variation in sexual reproduction is caused by the random fertilization between the individuals, crossing over and independent assortment of the characters that are present in the chromosomes. In sexual reproduction, the two types of gametes (not genetically identical) are involved (from different gametophyte). But if fertilization occurs between the gametes of same gametophyte, the spores (gametes) would be genetically identical.
