Predict/Explain Suppose you are a traveling salesman for SSC, the Spacely Sprockets Company. You travel on a spaceship that reaches speeds near the
- I. You want to be paid according to the clock on Earth, because the clock on the spaceship runs slow when it approaches the speed of light.
- II. Collect your pay according to the clock on the spaceship because according to you the clock on Earth has run slow.
- III. Your pay would be the same in either case because motion is relative, and all inertial observers will agree on the amount of time that has elapsed.

- (a) All but the closest galaxies are receding from our own Milky Way Galaxy. If a galaxy 12.0109ly ly away is receding from us at 0. 0.900c, at what velocity relative to us must we send an exploratory probe to approach the other galaxy at 0.990c, as measured from that galaxy? (b) How long will it take the probe to reach the other galaxy as measured from the Earth? You may assume that the velocity of the other galaxy remains constant. (c) How long will it then take for a radio signal to be beamed back? (All of this is possible in principle, but not practical.)arrow_forwardA friend passes by you in a spacecraft traveling at a high speed. He tells you that his craft is 20.0 m long and that the identically constructed craft you are sitting in is 19.0 m long. According to your observations, (a) how long is your spacecraft, (b) how long is your friends craft, and (c) what is the speed of your friends craft?arrow_forwardAn alien spaceship traveling at 0.600c toward the Earth launches a landing craft. The landing craft travels in the same direction with a speed of 0.800c relative to the mother ship. As measured on the Earth, the spaceship is 0.200 ly from the Earth when the landing craft is launched. (a) What speed do the Earth-based observers measure for the approaching landing craft? (b) What is the distance to the Earth at the moment of the landing crafts launch as measured by the aliens? (c) What travel time is required for the landing craft to reach the Earth as measured by the aliens on the mother ship? (d) If the landing craft has a mass of 4.00 105 kg, what is its kinetic energy as measured in the Earth reference frame?arrow_forward
- An interstellar space probe is launched from Earth. After a brief period of acceleration, it moves with a constant velocity, 70.0% of the speed of light. Its nuclear-powered batteries supply the energy to keep its data transmitter active continuously. The batteries have a lifetime of 15.0 years as measured in a rest frame. (a) How long do the batteries on the space probe last as measured by mission control on Earth? (b) How far is the probe from Earth when its batteries fail as measured by mission control? (c) How far is the probe from Earth as measured by its built-in trip odometer when its batteries fail? (d) For what total time after launch are data received from the probe by mission control? Note dial radio waves travel at the speed of light and fill the space between the probe and Earth at the time the battery fails.arrow_forwardYou have been hired as an expert witness in the future by an attorney representing the driver of a spacecraft. The driver is accused of exceeding the galactic speed limit of 0.700c relative to the Earth while being chased by a galactic police spacecraft. The driver claims he is innocent, that his speed was well below that limit. You have been provided with the following data: the police spacecraft was traveling at 0.600c while chasing the driver and a technician on the police spacecraft measured the suspected spacecraft as traveling at 0.300c relative to the police spacecraft. What advice should you give the attorney?arrow_forwardUnreasonable Results A spaceship is heading directly toward Earth at a velocity of 0.800c. The astronaut on board claims that he can send a canister toward the Earth at 1.20c relative to Earth. (a) Calculate the velocity the canister must have relative to the spaceship. (b) What is unreasonable about this result? (c) Which assumptions are unreasonable or inconsistent?arrow_forward
- (a) How long does it take the astronaut in Example 5.5 to travel 4.30 ly at 0.99944c (as measured by the earthbound observer)? (b) How long does it take according to the astronaut? (c) Verify that these two times are related through time dilation with as given.arrow_forwardAn astronaut wishes to visit the Andromeda galaxy, making a one-way trip that will take 30.0 years in the space-ships frame of reference. Assume the galaxy is 2.00 million light-years away and his speed is constant. (a) How fast must he travel relative to Earth? (b) What will be the kinetic energy of his spacecraft, which has mass of 1.00 106 kg? (c) What is the cost of this energy if it is purchased at a typical consumer price for electric energy, 13.0 cents per kWh? The following approximation will prove useful: 11+x1x2forx1arrow_forward(a) How long would the mum] in Example 5.3 have lived as observed on Earth if its velocity was. 0.0500c? (b) How far would it have traveled as observed on Earth? (c) What distance is this in the muon’s frame?arrow_forward
- An astronaut is traveling in a spacecraft in outer space in a straight line at a constant speed of 0.500c. Which of the following effects would she experience? (a) She would feel heavier, (b) She would find it harder to breath. (c) Her heart rate would change. (d) Some of the dimensions of her spacecraft would be shorter. (e) None of those answers is correct.arrow_forwardAn alien spaceship traveling at 0.600c toward the Earth launches a landing craft. The landing craft travels in the same direction with a speed of 0.800r relative to the mother ship. As measured on the Earth, the spaceship is 0.200 ly from the Earth when the landing craft is launched, (a) What speed do the Earth-based observers measure for the approaching landing craft? What is the distance to the Earth at the moment of the landing craft's launch as measured by the aliens? What travel time is required for the landing craft to reach the Earth as measured by the aliens on the mother ship? (d) If' the landing craft has a mass of 4.00 10s kg. what is its kinetic energy as measured in the Earth reference frame?arrow_forward(a) How far does the muon in Example 5.3 travel according to the earthbound observer? (b) How far does it travel as viewed by an observer moving with it? Base your calculation on its velocity relative to the Earth and the lime it lives (proper time). (c) Verify that these two distances are related through length contractionarrow_forward
