Introduction:

A gamete is the cell containing the genetic information that is forms in human reproductive organ which fuses with other sex gamete at the time of fertilization.

Explanation of Solution

The reproductive system ensures the survival of human species by producing and nourishing gametes in the reproductive organ (gonad).

In humans there are two types of gametes:

  • Ova/egg: It is produced by female gonad (ovaries) present in adult females, containing single set of chromosome. Every month one immature gamete called as oocyte is produced by single ovary under the influence of hormones and later turns into ova at the time of fertilization.
  • Sperm: It is the male gamete produced by male gonad (testis) present in adult males with single set of chromosome. About half a billion sperms are produced every day by adult male and during the ejaculation sperms are mixed with the secretion of accessory glands and forms semen which is discharged from male reproductive organ.
