To determine: The number of different heavy chain variable regions that can be theoretically be generated by somatic recombination in humans.
Introduction: Somatic recombination is the process for generating antibody and T-cell diversity in mammalian systems. An antibody has light and heavy chains. The variable regions in these chains (VL and VH) determine the properties of antibody for binding to antigen. The gene segments coding for these include groups of variable (V), diversity (D), joining (J), and constant (C) regions.
To determine: The number of different immunoglobins that could be produced if each of the given heavy chains could combine with 2000 light chains.
