Concept introduction:

Polymerization is a reaction when monomer molecules are reacted to form a polymer chain.  When a ketone and an amine is reacted to form a polymer, polyimine is formed in acidic conditions.  The ketone undergoes the following steps to form imine,

  • Nucleophilic attack
  • Protonation and deprotonation
  • Loss of leaving group.
