The synthesis and the breakdown of biological polymers are regulated by water. Removal of water leads to the formation of these biological molecules and addition of water leads to their breakdown. Dehydration synthesis is a chemical reaction in which two large biological molecules are joined together by the removal of water to form a polymer.
