Chapter 27, Problem 11P
Summary Introduction

To explain: The changes that can occur at each position without altering the encoded amino acid residue of 5ʹ–AUGAUAUUGCUAUCUUGGACU.

Introduction:

Mutation is the alteration in the sequence of the nucleotide of genome of extrachromosomal DNA, virus or an organism. Mutations can be insertion, deletion or substitution of one or more nucleotide base. In substitution mutation, single nucleotide is exchanged for another nucleotide.

Synonymous substitution involves substitution of one base with another in the coding region of gene. The amino acid formed after this type of mutation remains same if the substitution takes place at the third position of codon. This is because of the degeneracy of codons.
