To review:
Comment on the claim that increased temperatures will make planktonic algae grow faster and that carbon dioxide (CO2) will be removed from the atmosphere faster. This carbon will be further buried at the bottom of the ocean in calcium carbonate shells. Consequently, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will decrease and declining global warming. Hence, one should not worry about the rising temperatures associated with global climate change.
Introduction:
The planktonic algae are dependent on the light and nutrient availability for its growth. The process of a seedling can be employed to increase the production of plankton in the ocean, which can increase the uptake of CO2 (carbon dioxide) in water bodies.

- ACID RAIN Acid rain occurs due to the presence of certain pollutants in the atmosphere. Acid raiñ"can belcaused by the combustion of fossil tuels, erupting volcanges, or rotting vegetation that releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere. When fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline, and fuel oils are burned, they emit oxides of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen into the air. These oxides combine with moisture in the air to form sulfuric acid, carbonic acid, and nitric acid. The term "acid rain" is also applied to other forms of precipitation-snow, hail, sleet, and fog-that are similarly acidic. During the 20th century, acid rain was recognized as a leading threat to the Earth's environment. Most acid rain comes from fossil fuel emissions produced in the industrialized northern hemisphere--the United States, Canada, Asia, and most of Europe. Acid rain is devastating to all forms of life, but its effects are especially severe in freshwater habitats such as lakes, rivers, and…arrow_forwardFill out the blanksarrow_forwardWhat is the advantage of having a planktonic larval stage for benthic animals such as the sea urchin?arrow_forward
- The graphs show how the cloudiness of the water at two different sites varied over a period of one year. Site A had a low nitrate concentration. Site B had a high nitrate concentration. (i) Describe and explain the effect of increased nitrate concentration on algal growth. (ii) Algae do not live long. Explain why the presence of large numbers of algae results in a fall in the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. (iii) There are very few submerged water plants at Site B. Use (iii) the graphs to suggest how placing a speed limit on boats might allow submerged water plants to become re-established at Site B.arrow_forwardWhich statement best describes the relationship between carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and global average temperature? Higher CO2 concentrations coincide with lower temperatures since the 1800s. Higher CO2 concentrations coincide with higher temperatures but only since the Industrial Revolution. Higher CO2 concentrations coincide with higher temperatures for the past 400,000 years. The concentration of CO2 has only begun to fluctuate since humans have burned fossil fuels. As temperatures rise, CO2 concentrations decline.arrow_forwardWhich one of the following statements is false? Group of answer choices Water plays the main role in the increase in the mean global temperature referred to as global warming. Water does not cause global warming because the atmospheric lifetime of water vapor is short. The amount of energy absorbed when water evaporates is large due to its strong intermolecular forces. Water absorbs the greatest percentage of infrared radiation being emitted by the earth. The energy when released water condenses heats the atmosphere and fuels storms.arrow_forward
- Coral reefs are unique, living structures. Even though they appear to be hard, rock-like structures, the soft-bodied coral animals that build the elaborate, hard, rock-like reef structures around themselves live inside. Corals are unique animals because they have photosynthetic algae that live inside their cells. This unique relationship is beneficial to the algae since it has a safe place to live inside the coral cells, and it is beneficial to the coral since the algae are producing food via photosynthesis. From the description above, what type of symbiosis is described, and at what ecological level does this relationship exist? The relationship is an example of parasitism, and it exists at the community level. The relationship is an example of mutualism, and it exists at the community level.
