Concept introduction:

Step-growth polymerization occurs when molecules throughout a mixture join with any other molecule that has an appropriate functional group available to react, whether it is a monomer unit or another polymer molecule. The reaction mixture contains two different compounds, adipic acid and hexane-1, 6-diamine, each of which has two reactive functional groups. The carboxylic acid group from adipic acid reacts with an amine group from hexane-1, 6-diamine (HD) to form an amide and a molecule of water. Step-growth polymerization occurs between two existing chains or two monomers or an existing polymer chain and a monomer.
