According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) annual report issued last year, approximately one in five people in the United States have a sexually transmitted disease. One of the classic symptoms includes swelling of lymph nodes. If an inflicted person has swollen lymph nodes in the groin, how can an infection travel from the inguinal node to the cardiovascular system?
One of the common unfortunate consequences of a vasectomy is that the proximal ends of the ductus deferens rupture and spermatozoa are exposed to the immune system. The person with the testes then produces antibodies against their own sperm. This has consequences for the effectiveness of a vasectomy reversal.
In the situation described above, why are the spermatozoa considered foreign even though they are being produced within the person’s own seminiferous tubules? This immune response is not normal, and so describe how the testes’ structure prevents this immune reaction from occurring.
