Introduction: The term pH (-log10 [H+]) indicates the hydrogen ion concentration that affects the growth of microbes. Each microbe grows well at its optimal pH. Based on the capability to grow at various pH levels, the microbes are classified into neutrophils, acidophiles, and alkaliphiles.
Explanation of Solution
The concentration of hydrogen ion affects proteins as well as other charged molecules present in the cell. The higher pH value affects the solubility of charged molecules present in the cell and as a result, these molecules in the solution precipitate out. For example, in proteins, the amino acid charge gets affected and it causes denaturation and enzyme activity loss. Thus, the pH negatively affects microbial metabolism.
