Concept explainers
To determine:
The procedures used to introduce a bacterial gene into a plant.
Given:
A transgenic plant is a plant with an insertion of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from another organism.
Introduction:
DNA is introduced into a eukaryotic cell by a variety of techniques, such as transformation, injection, viral infection, or bombardment with DNA-coated tungsten particles. Because of their economic significance, plants have long been the subject of genetic analysis aimed at developing improved varieties. Recombinant DNA technology has introduced a new dimension to this effort because the genome modifications made possible by this technology are almost limitless. DNA can now be introduced from other species of plants, animals, or even bacteria.
