Chapter 26, Problem 1ADM
To determine
Lead Time: Lead time is the time consumed for the creation of a product. It refers to the time period between the time the order is placed and the product is completed. Lesser lead time creates a more competitive edge for the company.
Lead Time = Wait time + Process time + Queue time + Move time + Inspection Time
Wait time – Wait time refers to the time the product has to wait before the actual production begins.
Queue time – Queue time refers to the time the product spends waiting in a queue to be processed.
Move time – Move time refers to the time the product spends moving from one process to another.
To Suggest: Changes in the process to reduce the lead time.

Sunshield Insurance takes 15 days to make payments on insurance claims. Claims are processed through three departments: data input, claims audit, and claims adjustment. The three departments are located in different buildings, approximately one hour apart from each other. Claims are processed in batches of 200. Each batch of 200 claims moves through three departments on a wheeled cart. Management is concerned about customer dissatisfaction. Hence, the implementation of the following measures is adopt by the management to reduce lead time.
Adopt just-in-time principles in its claims payment operations
Switching from paper forms to electronic forms
Design claims payment "cells" that are organized around different types of insurance products or customers rather than processes
Implement a "pull" scheduling processes.
Please provide explanation for each measure on how it reduces the lead time of Sunshield. Thanks

A typical dentist’s office has a complicated mix of dental procedures and significant setup times; thus, it is similar to a job shop. Suppose a dentist works a 9-hour day with one hour for lunch and breaks. During the first six months the practice is open, he does all the work, including cleaning and setting up for the next dental procedure. Setup and processing times for three procedures are shown in the Microsoft Excel Online file below. Also shown are the number of appointments and demand for each type.
On a particular day, there are two scheduled first appointments for single tooth crowns (see last column of the table in the Microsoft Excel Online file below), one second appointment for a single tooth crown, three tooth-whitening appointments, four first appointments for a partial denture, one second appointments for a partial denture, and three third appointments for a partial denture. Assume there is one setup time per dental procedure to set up and clean the equipment and room…
