Chapter 25.4, Problem 2LO
Summary Introduction

To compare:

The gene regulation in prokaryotes with the gene regulation in eukaryotes.

Given:

Regulation of gene expression includes a wide range of mechanisms that are used by cells to increase or decrease the production of specific gene products (protein or RNA).

Introduction:

Gene expression can be characterized as the procedure by which the information encoded in a gene is utilized to coordinate the assembly of protein molecule. Gene expression is explored via a study of the protein function and structure, translation and transcription, stem cells and differentiated cells.

These products are often proteins, but in non-protein coding genes such as ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA) or small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes, the product is a functional RNA. The process of gene expression is used by all known life - eukaryotes (including multicellular organisms), prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea).

The metabolic pathway below is used for the production of the purine nucleotides adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and guanosine monophosphate (GMP) in eukaryotic cells. Assume each arrow represents a reaction catalyzed by a different enzyme. Using the principles of feedback inhibition, propose a regulatory scheme for this pathway that ensures an adequate supply of both AMP and GMP, and prevents the buildup of Intermediates A through G when supplies of both AMP and GMP are adequate.
