The fifth interval of the Paleozoic Era is the carboniferous period, which succeeds in the Devonian period and precedes the Permian period. It is a 60 million log period and is the longest period of the Paleozoic era and the second-longest era of the Phanerozoic period. This period was termed as carboniferous because of the presence of coal containing strata.
