Explanation of Solution
The nucleotides constituting the DNA and RNA are made up of three parts:
I. Nitrogenous Base:
The nitrogenous bases can be categorized into two categories, namely Purines and pyrimidines. The purines are Guanine and Adenine. Cytosine, Uracil and Thymine are the pyrimidines. The bases present in the DNA are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). While in RNA, the bases are adenine (A), thymine (T), uracil (U), and cytosine (C).
II. Pentose Sugar:
The sugar present in DNA is 2'-deoxyribose sugar. In RNA, the sugar present is ribose. Both the ribose and the deoxyribose are 5-carbon sugars.
III. Phosphate Group:
A single phosphate group is present in the nucleotides PO43-. The central atom is the phosphorus atom. One atom of oxygen is connected to the 5-carbon in pentose sugar and also to the phosphorus atom. When the phosphate groups link together to form the chains.
Nucleotides consists of three parts namely the nitrogen base, sugar and phosphate group.
