Chapter 25, Problem 25.1CRE
To determine

To identify the individuals and variables studied and state the null and alternative hypotheses corresponding to the study’s objective and indicate which inference procedure you would consider to test them.

Answer to Problem 25.1CRE

The individuals are the elderly patients with PAD,the response variables are the maximum walking distance and the two treatments, matched pairs t test inference procedure is used to test them and the hypotheses is:

  H0:μDM=0Ha:μDM>0

Explanation of Solution

In the question, it is given that they study compared the maximum walking distance for twenty such patients once they ate forty gram of dark chocolate and once they ate forty gram of milk chocolate. The milk and dark chocolate conditions were administered on two different weeks chosen random for each patient. Thus, by looking at the study we can say that the individuals are the elderly patients with PAD on which experiments were done and the response variables are the maximum walking distance of the patients and the two treatments of milk and dark chocolate on them. Since the two treatments were compared so we have the null and alternative hypotheses as:

  H0:μDM=0Ha:μDM>0

Where D represents the dark chocolate and M represents the milk chocolate. And we would consider matched pairs t test inference procedure to test them as we are comparing the result of the two treatments of the patients.

Bob and Teresa each collect their own samples to test the same hypothesis. Bob’s p-value turns out to be 0.05, and Teresa’s turns out to be 0.01. Why don’t Bob and Teresa get the same p-values? Who has stronger evidence against the null hypothesis: Bob or Teresa?
Review a classmate's Main Post. 1. State if you agree or disagree with the choices made for additional analysis that can be done beyond the frequency table. 2. Choose a measure of central tendency (mean, median, mode) that you would like to compute with the data beyond the frequency table. Complete either a or b below. a. Explain how that analysis can help you understand the data better. b. If you are currently unable to do that analysis, what do you think you could do to make it possible? If you do not think you can do anything, explain why it is not possible.
