Introduction:

Food first enters into the oral cavity where the digestion process is initiated. The oral cavity has various salivary glands that secrete saliva which contains enzymes such as salivary amylase that acts on a starch component of food and breaks it down into simple sugar.

There are various types of salivary gland that secretes saliva. The two broad types of salivary glands are intrinsic and extrinsic salivary glands.
