The amino acids are polymerized by enzymes and form amide linkages. The amino acids are joined together to form a peptide. The amide linkages formed in them are called peptide bonds. The single amino acid is called amino acid residue.

The determination of the sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide is by terminal residue analysis. This technique helps in identifying the N- and C-terminal amino acids.
