Chapter 24, Problem 58EAP

An infinite cylinder of radius R has a linear charge density λ .

The volume charge density (C/m3) within the cylinder (r R) is

ρ ( r ) = r ρ 0 / R , where ρ 0 is a constant to be determined.

a. Draw a graph of ρ versus x for an x-axis that crosses the cylinder

perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Let x range from -2R to 2R.

b. The charge within a small volume dV is d q = ρ d V . The integral

of ρ d V over a cylinder of length L is the total charge Q = λ L

within the cylinder. Use this fact to show that ρ 0 = 3 λ / 2 π R 2

Hint: Let dV be a cylindrical shell of length L, radius r, and thick-

ness dr. What is the volume of such a shell?

c. Use Gauss's law to find an expression for the electric field

strength E inside the cylinder, r R, in terms of λ and R.

d. Does your expression have the expected value at the surface,

r = R? Explain.

Positive charge is distributed in a sphere of radius R that is centered at the origin. Inside the sphere, the electric field is Ē(r) = kr-1/4 f, where k is a positive constant. There is no charge outside the sphere. a) How is the charge distributed inside the sphere? In particular, find an equation for the charge density, p. b) Determine the electric field, E(r), for r > R (outside the sphere). c) What is the potential difference between the center of the sphere (r = 0) and the surface of the sphere (r = R)? d) What is the energy stored in this electric charge configuration?
